How Safe Is Geely's Aegis Short Blade Battery?

An in-depth look at the Aegis Short Blade LFP battery in the Geely EX5, which passed a test of being pierced by eight steel nails simultaneously without catching fire, plus tips on battery care in Thailand's climate

How Safe Is Geely's Aegis Short Blade Battery?

The question our showroom team hears most often from those considering their first EV is "Is the battery safe?" — especially in Thailand's hot weather and heavy rain. For Geely, the answer lies in the Aegis Short Blade battery family, developed in-house by Geely and used in the Geely EX5 sold in Thailand.

LFP chemistry and short blade-shaped cells

The Aegis Short Blade uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, known for its thermal stability and longer service life than some other battery types. The cells are long and flat like a blade, but designed to be shorter for greater strength and denser packing. At its launch in 2024, Geely quoted an energy density of 192 Wh/kg, which is high for an LFP battery.

Tests tougher than the standard

The industry standard is a nail penetration test using a single steel nail, but Geely demonstrated penetrating an Aegis cell with eight 5 mm steel nails simultaneously and left it for an hour, reporting that the cell did not catch fire or explode. The battery pack also passed six further extreme tests:

  • Immersion in seawater to test corrosion
  • Operation in extreme cold
  • Repeated high-frequency scraping of the pack underside
  • Being run over by a 26-tonne vehicle
  • Side impact on the battery pack
  • Direct exposure to open flame

Geely explains that this durability comes from a grid-frame structure, energy-absorbing zones, a three-layer underbody protection plate and a thermal runaway control system. Note that the test results above are data released by Geely itself.

What it means for drivers in Thailand

For drivers in central Thailand, such as Ayutthaya, where flooding and damaged roads can occur at times, the strength and water protection of the underbody battery pack are significant. LFP chemistry also allows occasional charging to 100% without much impact on battery health, making long trips easier to plan.

In terms of warranty, the Geely EX5 in Thailand comes with an 8-year or 180,000 km high-voltage battery warranty under campaign terms announced by the distributor, adding confidence for long-term ownership.

Tips to keep your battery healthy for longer

  • Park in the shade when possible to reduce the load on the cooling system
  • Charge mainly with AC at home, and use DC Fast Charge when needed on the road
  • Avoid driving through water deeper than the level specified in the owner's manual
  • Attend scheduled maintenance so technicians can inspect the battery pack and update the software
